The Llanos

… are a unique animal paradise on the South American continent!

In the water holes of the flat landscape of the Llanos spectacle caimans are moving from one place to the other as well as different kinds of turtles and capybaras. Giant Anteaters and Tamanduas become more active after the sunset when they are looking for insects. In one place or the other an Anaconda moves smoothly on the street. In the rivers Orinoco dolphins are fishing Piranhas.
The journey takes you to one of the most beautiful streets in Venezuela; Through colonial Andean villages from Merida via the Eagle Pass to the Llanos to Hato El Cedral (classic Llanosfarm). The 56,000-hectare farm is functioning as a Beef farm, but also offers an infrastructure for tourists who can observe wildlife, caimans, capybaras, turtles and iguanas, which live protected on the grounds of the Hato. As part of a safari, you can discover up to 300 bird species along the water holes and in the savannah. The most striking birds are the purple Ibise, the pink spoonbill, the Jaribu storks as well as macaws, parrots, eagles and violets. The Llanos are the best area for bird watching in Venezuela. Ornithologists will find their dreamspots here. Also the largest snake in the world, the Anakonda, can be found here. Our local guides have already been able to pull some specimens out of the water. The longest specimen was up to 7m long. Experience a “piece of Africa” in Venezuela!

Day 1: Departure

The most scenic highway of Venezuela leads through colonial-styled Andean communities. We have a visit to a stone-built chapel made by Juan Felix Sánchez (UNESCO cultural heritage) and to the condor station. Then we ascend up to 4200 meters to the Eagle Pass. In the obscure environment of the Paramo its typical plants called Frailejones grow up to three meters high. From the glacier lake of Mucubaji we hike to the Laguna Negra. After the hike we eat a fresh trout fried in garlic. Then we continue down the outer wall of the Andes through various vegetation stages such as Páramo, Elfenwald and subtropical rainforest, until we reach the colonial Andendorf Altamira. Here we will spend the night in the center of the village, at the Plaza Bolívar, in a colonial, well-equipped manor house and take a nice dinner in a cozy round. Accommodation: Posada Altamira

Day 2: Los Llanos

After breakfast, we leave for Los Llanos Venezuela and arrive for lunch at the Hato El Cedral (classic Llanos farm). The 56,000-hectare farm is functioning as a Beef farm, but also offers an infrastructure for tourists who can observe wildlife, caimans, capybaras, turtles and iguanas, which live protected on the grounds of the Hato. After lunch you have the opportunity to start a tour that allows you to watch those animals in the savanna as well as up to 300 different bird species of which the most distinctive are the Purple Ibis, the Roseate Spoonbill, the Jaribu Stork, macaws and parrot, eagles, and owls. The Llanos are the best area for bird watching in Venezuela. Even in the rain period you have got good chances to trace the Tamandua, the Little Anteater as well as the Giant Anteater. The Anaconda, the world’s biggest serpent, is used to show up as well. On our excursions we already have found some exemplars of more than about 7 m of length. Accommodation: Hato el Cedral

Day 3: Hike and boat excursion

Early in the morning we make a small hike, where we see parrots and macaws. At 8:00 am there is a rich breakfast. Then we will make a boat trip, where we see pink fresh water dolphins. The tranquil river arms of Cano Matiyure and the Cano Caicara flowing through the terrain of the Hato El Cedral seem to be inviting to rare bird species such as the Agami Heron and many different raptor species. Also caimans, crocodiles and capybaras encounter in and around the water. At noon we go back to Mérida or you have the opportunity to get off in Barinas and continue by plane or bus to your next destination. On our Los Llanos Venezuela tour in the Hato el Cedral one is very close to the animals. Even cameras with low zoom are enough to make good animal capture. The ‘high’ and ‘low’ Los Llanos belong to the Orinoco basin. Most of the animal species you can see in the low Los Llanos. The Venezuelan state of Apure is the heart of Los Llanos. A world-famous place among animal observers and bird lovers.
